Developed by a consortium of vendor and user batching experts, the U.S. standard ISA S88.01-1995 and its IEC equivalent IEC 61512-1-1998, commonly referred to as ISA-88 or S88 (S88) standard, establish a common language for the design, operation and supervision of batching systems. S88 defines the hierarchical recipe management and process segmentation frameworks that separate products from the processes that make them. It enables reuse and flexibility of equipment and software, and provides a structure for coordinating and integrating across the traditional ERP, MES and control domains.
The S88 standard defines a methodology for separation of product information from production equipment capability and process control. This separation allows the same equipment to be used to make multiple products, or to perform different operations on the same product. The primary reason for this separation is to make recipe development simple enough to be performed without the services of a control systems engineer. The ability to rapidly develop and deploy new recipes is a major reason for the productivity improvements offered by S88. In addition, the common terminology established with S88 makes communication between all involved more easily understood, reducing errors and risk.
The Rockwell Automation batch solution leverages the S88 batch control model with engineering tools to define equipment, routing, procedural formulations, logic and phase control. It includes an S88 phase state model that you can use directly in control applications. You can apply this functionality consistently to a full range of batch processing and equipment configurations from simple to complex. The net result is that you now can optimize asset utilization, improve quality, reduce time to market, and reduce cost. To further optimize your facility, batch applications can be unified with other plant applications and disciplines to synchronize operations and present the information needed to make plant-wide production decisions. In addition, unifying disparate control disciplines with a single architecture from Rockwell Automation means that the support and assistance you’re accustomed to getting from Rockwell Automation is available throughout your entire operation. The S88 standard is designed to improve system flexibility, provide common terminology and save time. With Rockwell Automation’s batch functionality, you maximize these benefits and add scalability and reduced cost to the list of advantages you gain from S88.
